An attacking formation with three at the back and three forwards.
The 3-4-3 is an attacking formation that combines defensive stability through three centre-backs with maximum offensive threat through three forwards. The midfield four typically consists of two wingbacks and two central midfielders, creating width while maintaining central control. This formation is particularly effective against teams that defend narrowly. The key to 3-4-3 success is the wingbacks, who must be capable of fulfilling both defensive and attacking duties. The front three can be configured in various ways - a traditional striker with two wide forwards, or a false nine with two inside forwards. This formation was revolutionized by Antonio Conte at Chelsea, winning the Premier League in 2016-17, and has since been adopted by numerous top clubs.
Exploit channels and penalty-box movement
In the 3-4-3 diamond, valid role options include Inside Forward (cuts inside to shoot), Wide Forward (direct runs into the box), and Channel Forward (exploits the space between the opposing CB and FB — a high-energy runner who attacks the channel rather than going wide or cutting inside). The Channel Forward role is the natural fit for the Cruyff-inspired 3-4-3 diamond, where wide players attack in behind. In the 3-4-3 Wide variant, traditional wingers who hug the touchline work best.
Combine with the front two and finish chances
Can be a Complete Forward, Target Forward, or False Nine. In the 3-4-3 diamond, a False Nine who drops deep creates space for the wide forwards to run into the channels vacated by the pulling striker.
Width and crosses
Must be comfortable receiving ball high and defending deep
Control and protect
Need to cover large areas - box-to-box abilities essential
Build from the back
