FM26 National Team Squad: Provisional 26-Man Selection Guide

International management is new in FM26. This is how to pick a balanced provisional squad, narrow to the final 26-man tournament list, and build a side that survives a six-match knockout run.

Football Manager 2026 adds full international management for the first time since the licensing changes a decade ago. You can take charge of any FIFA-registered nation, run friendlies, qualify for tournaments, and pick a 26-man squad for the World Cup or continental championship. The mechanic is similar to club management but the squad selection is its own animal. You only see your players three or four times a year and a single tournament can define your tenure.

This guide covers how FM26 international squad selection works, the provisional 35 to final 26 narrowing process, squad balance principles for a six-match knockout, and how the National Squad Picker tool automates the workflow.

How FM26 International Squad Selection Works

FM26 international squads follow the modern FIFA pattern. Four weeks before a tournament, you submit a 35-man provisional squad. Two weeks before, you cut to a final 26. After the deadline, you can only replace a player in case of serious injury, and the replacement must come from your original 35.

Friendlies and qualifying games use a 23-man squad. You can change players freely between camps but you cannot call up a player who has been called up by a different nation in the same window. This matters for dual-eligibility races against rival nations.

Provisional Squad Screen Walkthrough

Open Squad > Provisional Squad from the international management menu. You will see five tabs:

  • Eligible players. Every player who qualifies for your nation, sorted by current ability.
  • Form. Last 6 matches for their club, including minutes played and average rating.
  • Heritage. Dual-national candidates and recent declarations. Important for newer nations.
  • Set-piece duty. Free-kick, corner, and penalty rankings across your candidate pool.
  • Squad balance. A live preview of your current 35-man balance by position and age.

Build your 35 here first. Do not narrow to 26 until you are happy with the depth at every position.

Squad Balance Principles

A 26-man tournament squad has to cover six matches in a knockout, plus the group stage. That is potentially nine matches in four weeks. Injuries are inevitable. Balance for that, not for a friendly.

Position Allocation

  • 3 goalkeepers. Always. Your starter, your tactical alternative (sweeper keeper vs traditional), and an emergency back-up.
  • 8 defenders. 4 centre backs, 4 full-backs (2 of each side). One of your centre backs must be ball-playing.
  • 8 midfielders. 2 defensive, 4 box-to-box or central, 2 attacking. Cover both possession and direct styles.
  • 7 forwards. 2 wide left, 2 wide right, 1 target striker, 2 mobile strikers. The target striker is your closing-out-a-lead option.

Tactical Coverage

Pick a primary tactic and a backup. The backup should be tactically opposite. If your primary is possession-based 4-3-3, your backup might be direct 4-4-2. Every player in your squad should be able to start in at least one of the two tactics. Specialists who only fit one are a luxury you cannot afford in a 26-man list.

Age Distribution

The optimal mix for a tournament run: 4 to 5 players aged 18 to 22 (energy and growth), 14 to 16 players aged 23 to 30 (peak performance), 5 to 7 players aged 31+ (experience and leadership). Skew younger if you are building a long-term project, older if you are managing for the current cycle only.

Squad Personalities

FM26 makes squad personality matter. A camp full of high-Determination "Resolute" or "Model Citizen" players outperforms a more technically gifted squad with weaker mentality. Aim for at least 5 of your 26 to have those personality types. Avoid more than 2 "Spineless" or "Low Determination" players regardless of attributes.

Narrowing to the Final 26

Cutting nine players from your provisional 35 is the hardest part. Use these tie-breakers in order:

  1. Tournament experience. A player with World Cup or continental tournament minutes is more reliable in a knockout than an equally rated debutant.
  2. Set-piece duty. A specialist taker is worth a roster slot even as a sub. Free kicks and corners decide tight tournament games.
  3. Versatility. A player who covers two positions counts for two roster slots. Keep your most flexible utility players.
  4. Personality. When two players are otherwise even, the better mentality wins. Especially for the back of your bench.
  5. Club form. Last resort. Form matters but it is the noisiest of the five inputs. Use only when the other four are tied.

FAQ

How does FM26 international squad selection work?

Submit a 35-man provisional squad four weeks before a tournament, narrow to a final 26 two weeks before. Replacements after the deadline must come from your original 35 and require a serious injury.

What is the FM26 26-man tournament squad limit?

26 players including at least 3 goalkeepers. A typical balance is 3 GK / 8 DEF / 8 MID / 7 FWD.

How do I balance an FM26 national team squad?

Start with your first XI. Add tactical backups for each starter. Use the last 4 to 5 slots on specialists: target striker, creative sub, pace winger, defensive midfielder for game management.

Should I pick form players or favourites for my FM26 squad?

Form decides the 22 to 26 slots. Your first XI is locked unless an injury forces a change. Use form as a tie-breaker, not a primary criterion.

How does the National Squad Picker tool work?

Tell it your nation, target tournament, and tactical style. It returns a ranked 26-man squad with role assignments, alternative options for each position, captain and set-piece duty recommendations, and a one-line rationale per pick.
