• Defence. Count natural options at centre-back and across both sides, then test any utility player against the roles you use.
• Midfield. Keep enough players to protect your first shape and to change it when a match calls for something different.
• Attack. Look for different ways to create or finish chances, rather than filling a fixed number of striker and winger slots.

Tactical cover

If you plan to change shape, check whether the squad can make that change. For example, a 4-3-3 may need a different midfielder or wide player when you ask it to defend deeper. Choose the change you expect to make, then keep the players who make it possible.

Fitness and form

Compare players competing for the same place. Recent minutes and condition may change who is ready for the opening match; a different player may offer better cover across the tournament. Avoid treating an age bracket or one recent rating as a selection rule.

The last few places

Use those places to cover a real gap. If your first-choice full-back is out, who starts? If you need a goal, who changes the attack? Those answers are more useful than a universal squad formula.

Compare the players on the edge of your squad against the job you need them to do. A useful order of checks is:

1. Availability. Is the player fit and eligible in this save and competition?
2. Position cover. Which role would be left short if you cut them?
3. Match options. Could they help you change shape or solve a particular problem?
4. Current readiness. Compare recent minutes and condition with the other players competing for that place.
